Knowledge Intensive Services

Supporting Knowledge Intensive Service (KIS) businesses in South Australia is an initiative of the Office of Services, a business unit within the South Australian Government’s Department of Trade and Economic Development.

What is a Knowledge Intensive Service Business?

Knowledge Intensive Services businesses are those organisations that use knowledge and technology to drive their business. They can be found in private sector business and commercial public sector organisations including research bodies. Generally KIS businesses are defined as businesses that:

  • Engage in R&D
  • Are high users of technology
  • Employ more highly skilled workers compared to other types of service businesses.
  • Are innovative
  • Provide services that are tradeable, can be exported and often substitute for imports from other states and countries

Why the South Australian Government is Interested in KIS Businesses

Services are a key contributor to South Australia’s economy providing an estimated $1.9 billion a year to its economy. The South Australian Government believes that South Australia has comparative advantage in the development of its high-value knowledge-intensive services sector. (Source: “South Australia’s Knowledge Intensive Services Sector” ACIL Tasman, Aug 2009).

The South Australian Government has identified the potential for services exports and import replacement to expand with a focus on the following industry sectors:

  • Professional, scientific and technical services sector
  • Information, media and telecommunications sector
  • Specialist support services to agriculture, forestry, fishing and aquaculture sector
  • Franchising services
  • Employment Services
  • Education and training (specifically vocational education and training and higher education)
  • Arts and recreation services sector

Support Programs for South Australian KIS Businesses

The Department of Trade and Economic Development (DTED) is developing a range of programs and initiatives to support the growth opportunities of companies engaged in the provision of knowledge intensive services. These initiatives include access to interstate and overseas markets, capability building and innovation opportunities.

KIS Showcase Directory – Your Access to Interstate and Overseas Markets

A key support initiative in helping knowledge intensive services to access interstate and international businesses is the development of the KIS Showcase Directory. This directory is available online and in print format.

This is FREE service to South Australian businesses that can demonstrate outstanding leadership in the delivery of knowledge intensive services. The main benefits to your business of the KIS Showcase Directory include:

  • An opportunity to showcase your business to national and international buyers and investors.
  • Increased exposure to trade opportunities through the South Australian Government’s overseas offices.
  • Encourage collaboration between KIS businesses to help develop better supply chain networks, project bid teams and access to research organisations.
  • Promote KIS business to private and government business advisor networks.
