SA’s Economy

Riding a wave of economic opportunity

South Australia’s economic performance since 2000 has been strong:

  • Gross State Product is 22.7% higher (2007-08)1
  • Employment is 17.1% (116,300 persons) higher (May 2009)2
  • Business investment is 56.1% higher (year to March quarter 2009)3
  • State Final Demand is 39.0% higher (year to March quarter 2009)3
  • Merchandise exports are 47.6% higher (year to April 2009)4

Unemployment is at a low rate - 5.6% in May 2009.2

Leading forecasters Access Economics, ANZ Bank and the Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) predict Gross State Product growth of 1.00% - 1.75% in 2008-09 and -0.50% to 2.00% in 2009-10. (Growth forecasts have been downgraded in light of the global financial crisis.)5

Access Economics is forecasting South Australia’s economy will continue growing faster than the national economy from 2008-09 to 2010-11.

Adelaide is the least costly city to set up and do business in Australia according to KPMG's 2008 Competitive Alternatives Report.6

The State has huge mining potential - ranked 10th most prospective location in the world by Canada’s Fraser Institute, up from 31st place a few years ago.7

South Australia’s future growth is focussed on continuing to improve and promote our competitiveness, innovation and productivity to benefit from these strong economic conditions.
