Adelaide continues to outrank all other Australian cities as the most cost-competitive place to do business in Australia.

The latest KPMG Report, results of which were released in March, compares the costs of doing business in cities across the world. It shows Adelaide has maintained its number one ranking within Australia as having the lowest business costs compared with Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Of 102 global cities featured in the Competitive Alternatives 2008 study, including the four Australian cities surveyed, Adelaide was found to have the third lowest business costs in its population bracket of 500,000 to 1.5 million.

Internationally, Adelaide ranks ahead of (has lower business costs than):

• most cities in the western and Pacific regions of the US and Canada
• most cities in the generally higher-cost US Northeast
• all cities studied in Europe and Japan

Deputy Premier Kevin Foley says the results reinforce the South Australian Government’s message that Adelaide is “open for business”.

He says South Australia has a buoyant economy with low unemployment and is preparing to meet the needs of the State’s booming mining and defence industries.
