The State Government’s continued support for regional South Australia has been underlined in the Budget with more than $200 million provided for new initiatives on top of ongoing commitments in health, education, transport and justice.

Treasurer Kevin Foley acknowledges that the regions play a vital role in the State’s overall economic performance but that because of the severe prolonged drought many areas have been suffering hardship.

“We know many people living in regional communities have been ‘doing it tough’ through this period and we also know that for broader economic prosperity to be guaranteed we need to ensure that rural communities remain sustainable,” Mr Foley says.

“The regions are home to 295,000 South Australians, almost a fifth of our population.  They’re the engine room for our exports and helping them to remain sustainable is part of ensuring they have a bright economic future.

“That’s why this year’s Budget includes a significant investment to upgrade the state’s rural roads, including the freight transport network,” Mr Foley says.
